RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team dropped its first Southern Conference game of the year and only its seventh regular season SoCon game in program history Saturday as the 17th-ranked Spiders fell 13-11 on the road at No. 12 Jacksonville. The loss is also the first all-time in the series against the Dolphins, snapping Richmond's eight-game winning streak in the series.
The Spiders (6-4, 1-1 SoCon) fell behind 13-6 in the second half before scoring the final five goals of the game but ran out of time in the comeback. Graduate attack Ryan Lanchbury (Burlington, Ontario) led the way with a team-high six points, scoring four goals and adding two assists. Graduate midfielder Luke Frankeny (Wilmington, N.C.) added three goals, but was one of just five Spiders who scored in the loss.
The game was back-and-forth for the first quarter, with Lanchbury scoring three-straight for the Spiders and making it a 5-4 contest with 8:48 remaining in the first half. Jacksonville (10-2) scored the game's next five goals and seven out of eight goals, raising its lead to 12-5 late in the third quarter.
The Dolphins took a 13-6 lead with 43 seconds remaining in the third quarter before the Spiders mounted their comeback attempt. Junior Dalton Young (Chantilly, Va.) gave Richmond a spark as he scored in the final second of the quarter. Lanchbury and Frankeny added goals just 50 seconds apart, pulling Richmond within 13-9 with 11:54 remaining.
The Spiders made it a three-goal game on a goal from Lance Madonna (East Syracuse, N.Y.) and Jeff Nugent (Monroe, Conn.) pulled them within two with 1:27 remaining, but the Spiders would get no closer.
Freshman Jared Chenoy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won 17-of-26 faceoffs while short-stick midfielder Joe Gooley (Duxbury, Mass.) led the team with a career-high nine ground balls. Redshirt freshman goalie Zach Vigue (Apex, N.C.) posted 14 saves in the loss for the Spiders.
Richmond returns home to Robins Stadium next Saturday when it hosts Mercer. Faceoff is set for 11 a.m. and is the first game of a men's/women's lacrosse doubleheader.
