Spiders Fall on Penalty Kick at St. Bonaventure
10/16/2022 | Women's Soccer
ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. – The Richmond Spiders statistically dominated the attack Sunday afternoon at St. Bonaventure, but fell victim to a first-half penalty kick to lose 1-0 to the Bonnies on the road.
Richmond falls to 3-9-3 overall and 2-4-2 in Atlantic 10 play this season while St. Bonaventure improves to 3-7-6 overall and 1-7-1 in A-10 play.
"I love how our girls played today," said head coach Marty Beall. "In the first half, we created some excellent chances, and we were very unfortunate to be down 1-0 due to the penalty kick. In the second half, we were brilliant. We had the ball for the majority of the time while creating 17 shots in the second half alone. Unfortunately for us, Bona's goalkeeper made some big time saves for her team while we hit the post numerous times today. But that's soccer sometimes. At the end of the day, the team that wins scores more than their opponent. That being said, I'm really proud of how our girls played today."
The Spiders outshot Bona's 26-10 including 17-5 in the second half. Fourteen of those shots reached the target, compared to Bona's four.
Richmond also held the advantage in corners 4-1.
Molly Wierman led the Spiders with a career-high nine shots with six of those on goal. Eight other Spiders registered a shot in the game, including Emma Coleman who had five with three on goal.
Goalkeeper Taylor Montague made three saves for Richmond on the day.
Richmond continues on the road for its last away game of the regular season Thursday, October 20 at Davidson. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
