Men’s Tennis Drops Hard Fought A-10 Final Against VCU

ORLANDO, Fla. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost a close doubles point and fell in three singles matches to fall short against top-seeded VCU Sunday at the USTA National Campus.

The Spiders (8-9, 3-1 A-10) started the match falling short in doubles after losing the first two matches. Senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) and junior Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) fell against Charles Bertimon and Quentin Coulaud, 6-2 at No. 3 doubles.

Freshman Daniel Kliebhan (Newtown, Pa.) and junior Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) were tied 3-3 but lost three-straight games to lose the doubles point against Lleyton Cronje and David Cierny, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.

Junior John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) were down 4-5 against Inigo Torree Martin and Rayane Stable (No. 72 in the nation) at No. 2 doubles.

In singles, Torre Martin won in straight sets against Wernink, 6-1, 6-1 to make the score 2-0. Cronje, ranked 80^th in the nation, won against Fernandez, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. At No. 4 singles, Walsh battled after dropping the first set 6-4 against Stable. Walsh was down 5-0 and saved multiple match points before Stable won the deciding match in the second set, 6-2.

Three singles matches went unfinished with Richmond leading at No. 2 singles. Kliebhan held a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 lead against Bertimon at No. 2 singles. Erwin was in the second set against Coulaud, 4-6, 5-5 at No. 5 singles. In the final match, Keitelman was tied in the second set 4-4 against Zgraggen at No. 6 singles.

The Spiders finished the season with a 8-9 overall record making the A-10 finals for the second-straight season.
