
Richmond Knocks Off George Washington, 5-0

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team won all three doubles matches and held a 3-0 lead before the match was delayed due to rain. The Spiders completed two matches indoors at the Rain Tree facility to defeat George Washington, 5-0 Saturday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
"It was a great match," head coach Mark Wesselink said. We had to fight for everything and Andy (Campodonico) made a great come from behind second-set win. Dessi continues to be on a roll and Carly took control early and didn't look back. Adrienne clinched it for us with some solid pressure play winning 7-5 in the second set."
The Spiders (3-3, 2-1 A-10) won all three doubles matches to go ahead 1-0 in the match. At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won against Stella Wiesemann and Alexis Nelson, 6-2.
Sophomore Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Sara Salemyr (Stockholm, Sweden) clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 win against Alexandra Vesikallio and Sarah Bodewes at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, junior Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) and senior Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) went the distance earning a 7-6 (8-6) win against Luciana Kunkel and Charlotte Bell at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, freshman Carly Cohen (Pepper Pike, Ohio) gave Richmond a 2-0 lead after winning in straight sets against Bell, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Campodonico made it 3-0 after winning 6-0, 7-5 against Vesikallio at No. 3 singles.
The rain started to fall as Zlateva was leading 6-4, 5-3 against Nelson at No. 2 singles and Haynes was leading 6-0, 6-5 against Thompson at No. 6 singles.
The match would be moved indoors at the Raintree facility and Haynes clinched the win against Thompson 6-0, 7-5. Moments later, Zlateva earned another point by defeating Nelson, 6-4, 6-3.
Salemyr and Dunbar both went unfinished in their matches. Dunbar was in a third set trailing 6-3, 4-6, 0-1. Salemyr went unfinished against Bodewes at No. 4 singles trailing 5-7, 1-3 in the second set.
Richmond will face Navy on the road indoors on Sunday, March 28 at 1 p.m. in Annapolis, Maryland.
