
Spiders Earn Clutch Road Win At Navy, 4-3

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team won the doubles point and earn three singles wins to defeat Navy on the road, 4-3, Sunday at the Tose Family Tennis Center.
"This was a challenge," head coach Mark Wessenlink said. "Three matches in four days after all the restrictions really tested us. Navy is always strong and well coached. To get a win will help our confidence and toughness. Polina Shitikova clinched in her first college match, Andy (Campodonico) and Dessi (Zlateva) continued their strong play."
With Richmond leading 3-2, freshman Polina Shitikova (Rybinsk, Russia), playing in her first collegiate match, clinched the victory in a third set match against Katreina Corpuz at No. 5 singles, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.
The Spiders (4-3, 2-1 A-10) won two of the three doubles matches to go ahead 1-0 in the match. At No. 1 doubles, graduate student Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and senior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won against Jillian Taggart and Miranda Deng, 6-1.
Sophomore Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and freshman Sara Salemyr (Stockholm, Sweden) clinched the doubles point with a 6-1 win against Katreina Corpuz and Meghana Komarraju at No. 2 doubles.
In the final doubles match, freshman Carly Cohen (Pepper Pike, Ohio) and senior Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) lost 6-3 against Corinne Farid and Samantha Johns at No. 3 doubles.
In singles, Navy tied the match at 1-1 after Deng won in straight sets against Cohen, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4 singles. The Spiders went back up 2-1 after Campodonico won in straight sets against Komarraju, 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Zlateva, playing No. 1 singles for the first time this season, won in straight sets against Taggart, 6-4, 6-4 to give Richmond a 3-1 lead. Navy got within 3-2 after Samantha Johns earned a straight-sets win against Haynes, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
In the final singles match, Dunbar went the distance with Moore after splitting the first two sets. Dunbar won the first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5) but lost the second set 6-3 to setup a third set. Moore picked up the final point for Navy with a win in the third set, 6-4 against Dunbar.
Richmond will two weeks to prepare for William & Mary on Sunday, April 11 at Noon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
