SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – University of Richmond goalkeeper Taylor Montague made a career-high 11 saves Thursday night in a 1-0 Atlantic 10 loss to Saint Louis on the road. The Spiders allowed a season-high 16 corner kicks, and the 27 shots allowed (15 on goal) were the most Richmond has allowed in a conference game this season.
Richmond drops to 7-8-1 (5-4-0 A-10) on the year after being shut out for the first time since the season opener at Virginia on August 19. Saint Louis improves to 9-7-1 (7-2-0 A-10) with its fifth straight win and fifth straight shutout.
The Spiders and Billikens went into halftime scoreless, but after pelting Montague all night, Saint Louis finally broke through in the 62nd minute when Emily Gaebe took control of a loose ball and drove all the way in to beat Montague low and to the right for a 1-0 Saint Louis lead.
In addition to Montague's 11 saves, Richmond made three team saves. In the first half, Molly Morgan turned away a header off a set piece before TJ Anderson cleared a shot out of the box. Morgan headed out another shot at the goal line later in the 65th minute.
Richmond was outshot 27-5 in the game and Saint Louis held the advantage in corners 16-2. Anderson and Molly Wierman each had a pair of shots while Jessie Prillaman had one.
The Spiders close out the regular season at home Sunday when they host Dayton for a 1 p.m. kickoff. Sunday is also senior day, and Richmond's 10 seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony beginning at 12:35 p.m.
