Richmond Takes Down Delaware, 4-1

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team played six singles matches to make sure rain wouldn't cut its match short and defeated Delaware, 4-1, Friday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
Richmond and Delaware started the match with six singles matches in hopes of getting a match in with rain in the forecast.
Senior Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) started with a straight-sets win against Isabella Montana, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Freshman Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) earned a straight-sets win against Viva Laas, 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) gave Richmond a 3-0 lead after defeating Sarah Whited, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. Delaware earned a point at No. 1 singles as Eliza Askarova won in straight sets against Junior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio), 0-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Senior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) clinched the win with a comeback win at No. 3 singles against Caragh Courtney, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
In the final match, senior Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) went unfinished after leading against Jo Jo Bach 2-6, 6-3, 5-3 at No. 4 singles.
Doubles matches did not begin because of rain.
Richmond will head to New Orleans for a pair of spring break matches against Nicholls (March 10) and New Orleans (March 11).
