Spiders Drop Road Match At Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team lost the doubles point and four singles matches in a 5-1 loss on the road at Liberty on Saturday afternoon at the Crosswhite Athletic club.
"Andrea is playing some of her best tennis," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "The doubles point could have gone either way but we played a little tentatively on some big points. If we continue to develop our mental games we can go on a run."
The Spiders (3-5) fell behind 1-0 in the match after dropping two of three doubles matches. Senior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and senior Lyndell Giffenig fell 6-0 to Kalani Soli and Eloise Saraty at No. 1 doubles.
The Flames clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles as junior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) and senior Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) lost to Tiffany Nguyen and Micaela Ode Mitre.
Freshman Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) and senior Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) earned a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles against Caisey Lee Emery and Alexandra Almborg.
In singles action, Campodonioc tied the match at 1-1 with a straight-sets win against Ode Mitre, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. The Flames took a 2-1 lead after Esther Lovato won in straight sets against Owens, 6-1, 7-5 at No. 4 singles.
Nguyen made it 3-1 after a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles against Marshall. Almborg clinched the win for Liberty with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Zlateva at No. 2 singles. Dunbar battled hard at No. 1 singles forcing a third set but fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 against undefeated Soli.
In the final match, Giffenig was trailing 4-3 in the first set before the match went unfinished.
Richmond will have two weeks to prepare for a home match against Georgetown on Saturday, Feb. 29 at Noon.
