
Heiberg Clinches Thrilling 4-3 Win Against Davidson

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team played a marathon match but came away with a thrilling 4-3 win against Davidson Saturday night at the Country Club of Virginia.
This was Important A-10 match and I am proud of the way we played under pressure," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "We came out with a strong doubles point and found a way to win three matches in singles."
With the match tied at 3-3, sophomore Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) edged Mira Gladstone, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 5 singles. In the final set, Heiberg jumped out to a 3-0 lead and built a 5-3 lead before breaking her opponent's serve to win the match at 6-3.
Richmond (2-4, 1-0 A-10) won the doubles point after winning all three matches. At No. 2 doubles, senior Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and junior Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won 6-1 against Nicole Krykanov and Alexandra Abele.
The Spiders clinched the doubles point after senior Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and freshman Andrea Campodonico (Asuncion, Paraguay) earned a 6-1 win against Alyssa Hahn and Josie Schaffer at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, senior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and senior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) held on for a 6-4 win against Samantha Armas and Emma Heiderscheit at No. 1 doubles.
In singles action, the Wildcats tied the match at 1-1 after Abele won in straight sets against Dunbar, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Zlateva gave Richmond a 2-1 lead after a straight-sets win at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Marshall won in the third set against Elizabeth Trulock, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Davidson cut the lead to 3-2 after a third set win at No. 4 singles as Heiderscheit defeated Owens, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-4.
The Wildcats won another third set match as Schaffer won in the third set against Campodonico, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 at No. 6 singles.
Richmond will head to Hampton, Virginia to face the Lady Pirates on Friday, Feb. 7 at Noon.
