
Richmond Drops A-10 Road Match At VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point and fell short in singles in an Atlantic 10 road match at VCU on Wednesday at the VCU bubble.
The Spiders started the match by dropping the first two doubles matches. Senior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and sophomore John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) fell to Rayane Stable and Inigo Torre Martin, 6-0, at No. 2 singles.
The Rams clinched the doubles point as senior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) and sophomore Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) battled but fell 7-5 to Charles Bertimon and Daniel Khin at No. 3 doubles.
In the final doubles match, sophomore Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and senior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) went unfinished trailing 6-5 against Lleyton Cronje and David Cierny at No. 1 doubles.
In singles, Martin won in straight sets against Walsh, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Bertimon gave VCU a 3-0 lead after a straight-sets win against Evans, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Cronje clinched the win with a 6-4, 6-4, win against Fernandez at No. 1 singles.
Lovitt got Richmond on the board with a straight-sets win against Cierny, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Freshman Ricky Bell (Rockville, Md.) lost in three sets to Khin, 6-2, 6-7, 10-7.
In the final match, sophomore Alex Wernink (Glen Cove, N.Y.) fell to Timo Zgraggen in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Richmond will host Hampton on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Noon at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
