Richmond Falls In Regular Season Finale Against VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team lost the doubles point and three singles matches against crosstown rival VCU Tuesday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders (7-9, 2-3 A-10) lost the first two doubles matches against VCU. At No. 2 doubles, Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) fell to Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Melissa Ifidzhen, 6-2.
The Rams clinched the doubles point after sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) and junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) lost a close match against Marina Alcaide Bakkari and Sofia Sualehe, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles.
Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) were trailing 5-6 against Anna Rasmussen and Noumea Witmus when the double point was clinched.
In singles action, VCU took a 2-0 lead after Diaz-Delgado won in straight sets against Dunbar, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 6 singles, Sualehe won in straight sets against senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City), 6-0, 6-1.
The Rams clinched the win with a win at No. 2 singles with Rasmussen defeating Marshall, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) was tied 6-6 in the first set when the match was completed.
Two other matches went unfinished as Owens was down 6-2, 3-0 against Kanako Yano at No. 4 singles and Zlateva was leading 5-4 in the first set against Alcaide Bakkari at No. 3 singles.
Richmond will wait to find out what seed they will be at the 2019 Atlantic 10 tournament (April 24-27) held at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
