Spiders Advance To A-10 Quarterfinals With Win Over Dayton

ORLANDO, FL. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team took care of business with a clean 4-0 sweep against Dayton in the Atlantic 10 Championship first round Wednesday afternoon at USTA National Campus.
The Spiders (8-9) won the doubles point after winning the first two doubles matches. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) earned a 6-1 win against Emily Zargham and Kelly Pleiman at No. 1 doubles.
The Spiders clinched the doubles point after Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) won easily against Mattea Kilstofte and Natalie Allen, 6-1.
At No. 3 doubles, junior Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) were leading 4-3 when the point was clinched.
In singles, Dunbar gave Richmond a 2-0 lead after winning 6-0, 3-0 retired against Kilstofte at No. 1 singles. Owens won in straight sets against Brascia, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles.
The Spiders clinched the match 4-0 after senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City) defeated Benjamin, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.
Freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) was winning 6-1, 4-2 at No. 5 singles when the match was clinched. At No. 3 singles, Zlateva was a couple points away from winning with a 6-3, 5-0 lead against Pleiman.
Marshall also went unfinished and was winning 7-6 (4), 1-1 at No. 2 singles against Zargham.
Richmond will now face third-seeded UMass on Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
