RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team lost the doubles point but responded with five of six singles wins to take down DePaul, 5-2, Tuesday at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
"I was very proud of how we fought back during singles," head coach Houston Barrick said. "It wasn't a typical match for us after going down in doubles but we had a lot of strong performances in singles. We will look to build on this win in our road trip this weekend."
The Spiders lost the doubles point after dropping two of three matches. At No. 1 doubles, Boris Spaniaard and Christopher Casati defeated freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.), 6-3.
DePaul clinched the doubles point at No. 3 doubles after junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) fell 6-3 against Conor O'Meara and Luuk Wassenaar.
In the final doubles match, freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) went unfinished against Fran Tonejc and Vito Tonejc with the match tied at 5-5.
In singles, Lovitt won in straight sets against Spaniaard, 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to tie the match at 1-1. At No. 5 singles, Erwin won in straight sets against Casati, 6-3, 6-4. Evans gave Richmond a 3-1 lead after taking down Wassenaar, 6-1, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 singles.
At No. 4 singles, Walsh lost the first set against Fran Tonejc, 1-6, before winning the next two sets, 6-4, 6-4 to clinch the win for the Spiders. Fernandez fell just short in his third set match against Vito Tonejc, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, at No. 1 singles.
In the final match, sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) outlasted Tamas Zador, 6-2, 6-7 (4), 7-5 at No. 6 singles. Nardini dropped a close second set tiebreaker 7-4 but bounced back to win 7-5 in the third set to give Richmond their fifth point of the match.
Richmond will head out on the road for an Atlantic 10 match at Saint Joseph's on Friday, March 29, at 2:30 p.m. in Philadelphia. The Spiders will conclude the road trip with a match against St. Francis Brooklyn on Saturday, March 30, at 4 p.m.
