
Richmond Drops Tight Home Opener Against Elon

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team took the doubles point but Elon battled back to earn a 5-2 comeback win Saturday in the home opener at Westhampton Tennis Courts.
The Spiders won the doubles point taking wins at No. 3 and No. 1 doubles. Freshman Campbell Erwin (San Antonio, Texas) and junior Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) defeated Felipe Osses-Konig and Taylor Foote, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles. Elon's Frank Frankel and Camilo Ponce won 6-2 against junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) and freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.), at No. 2 doubles.
In the deciding doubles match, freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) won a tiebreaker 7-6 (4) against Mario Paccini and Felipe Sarrasague at No. 1 doubles. Keitelman won the match with two big serves leading 5-4 in the tiebreaker.
In singles, Elon tied the match at 1-1 after Osses-Konig won in straight sets against Evans, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Erwin gave Richmond a 2-1 lead with a 7-5, 6-4 win against Jacob Bicknell at No. 6 singles.
The Phoenix tied the match at 2-2 when Sarrasague won in straight sets against Fernandez, 7-6 (3), 6-1, at No. 1 singles. Senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.) lost a tough battle against Paccini, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 2 singles.
Elon clinched the match after Frankel rallied against Lovitt, 0-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the third set at No. 4 singles. In the final match, Elon's Ponce won two close sets against Walsh, 7-5, 7-6 (5), at No. 5 singles.
Richmond (8-3) will look to bounce back with a match against Liberty on Sunday, March 3, at 6 p.m. at the Boar's Head Resort in Charlottesville, Virginia.
