
Richmond Takes Down Campbell, 6-1

CARY, N.C. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team improved to 3-3 on the season with a 6-1 win against Campbell Saturday in Cary, North Carolina.
The Spiders took a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. At No. 2 doubles, Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) earned a 6-1 win against Inma Ramon and Isabel Boada.
The Camels got a win at No. 3 doubles as Lea Cutura and Lucile Pons defeated Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City), 6-4.
Richmond clinched the doubles point after junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) won 6-4 at No. 1 doubles against Ana Castillo and Lou Regen.
In singles action, Dunbar won in straight sets against Castillo, 6-1, 6-3. Marshall picked up a tough third set win against Regen, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6.
At No. 3 singles, Zlateva won in straight sets against Cutura, 6-4, 6-2. Owens earned a 6-2, 6-4, win at No. 4 singles against Nicoara. Ramirez won a tight match in straight sets against Ramon, 6-3, 7-6 (5), at No. 6 singles.
Freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) lost the only point for the Spiders in a third set against Pons, 3-6, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Richmond was forced to cancel its home match against Elon set for Sunday, Feb. 24, due to high winds and rain in the Richmond area. The next match will be at home against St. John's on Tuesday, March 5, at 2 p.m.
