Head Coach Mark Wesselink Earns Career-Win No. 400
TOWSON, Md. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team bounced back from a tough loss and earned a convincing 6-1 win on the road at Towson Saturday night at the Coppermine Racquet & Fitness club.
Richmond won the doubles point to go ahead 1-0 in the match. All three doubles matches were close as Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) won 6-4 at No. 2 doubles against Lucy Gloninger and Themis Haliou.
Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) lost a close match to Alexa Martinez and Jane Shusterman, 6-4.
In the deciding doubles match, Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and Ana Ramirez (Mexico City, Mexico) won 6-4 against Jessica Assenmacher and Phoebe Collins at No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, the Spiders came out and won four matches in the third set. Towson earned their lone win at No. 6 singles as Collins won in straight sets against Giffenig, 6-2, 6-2.
At. No. 5 singles, Heiberg won in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5 against Claire Bedi. Dunbar outlasted Martinez, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, at No. 1 singles.
Marshall and Zlateva both earned comeback wins in their matches. Zlateva dropped the first set 4-6 against Lawson and won the second set 6-0 before winning the third 6-3.
Owens picked up the sixth point for Richmond with a win against Gloninger, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 4 singles.
Richmond returns home for the next four matches, including its home opener against Elon on Friday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m. at the Westhampton tennis courts.
