
Spiders Fall In Close 4-3 Match At Delaware

WILMINGTON, Del. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team lost the doubles point, which proved to be the difference in a 4-3 loss on the road at Delaware Friday at the Delcastle Tennis Center.
"Tough loss but we learned what we need to improve on," head coach Mark Wessenlink said. "If we can just keep learning a little bit with each match we will be tough to beat."
Richmond (1-3) fell behind early after dropping the doubles point. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) earned a 6-2 win against Viva Laas and Draga Sabotic, at No. 1 doubles.
Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway) lost to Caragh Courtney and Emily Gotkiewicz, 6-3, at No. 3 doubles. In the deciding doubles match, Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) fell to Sarah Hall and Sarah Whited, 6-3, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, Delaware took a 2-0 lead after Gotkiewicz won in straight sets against Owens, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles. The Blue Hens made it 3-0 after Courtney defeated Zlateva, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
At No. 6 singles, Tayo Adetunji clinched the match with a straight-sets win against senior Ana Ramirez (Mexico City, Mexico), 6-3, 6-2.
The Spiders picked up their first win at No. 1 singles as Dunbar won a comeback match in three sets against Laas, 3-6, 6-1, 6-0. At No. 2 singles, Marshall won in straight sets against Hall, 7-5, 6-2.
UR earned their third point of the match after Heiberg won in three sets against Whited, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.
Richmond continues the road trip with a night match against Towson on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 inside the Coppermine Racquet & Fitness club.
