Richmond Sweeps Hampton, 7-0
01/27/2019 | Men's Tennis
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team earned a clean sweep on the road against Hampton, 7-0, Sunday night at the James River Country Club.
"What a great bounce back win for the guys tonight," head coach Houston Barrick said. "We were definitely a little down after losing to VCU on Thursday, so I was really interested to see how we would handle ourselves today. The guys came out fired up and ready to play from the very first point. I am so proud of how Brice played today. He did a great job of playing with energy and focus. I think the other guys fed off of that."
Hampton only had five healthy players so they defaulted at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Richmond clinched the doubles point after freshman Josh Keitelman (Chevy Chase, Md.) and junior Matt Fernandez (Richmond, Va.) defeated Fernando Fernandes and Charles Hudson, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman John Walsh (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) and junior George Lovitt (Marvin, N.C.) earned a 6-4 win against Davy Van Geerke and Luke Thompson at No. 2 doubles.
With the defaulted win at No. 6 singles, the Spiders took a 3-0 lead after Lovitt won in straight sets against Hudson, 6-2, 6-0. Senior Brice Polender (Lake Bluff, Ill.) clinched the victory with a tough 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles against Davy Van Geerke.
Richmond's Klein Evans (Raleigh, N.C.) made it 5-0 after a straight-sets win against Fernandes, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 singles. Fernandez defeated Thompson, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles to push the Spiders lead to 6-0.
In the final match, sophomore Joe Nardini (Arlington, Va.) completed the sweep with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Richmond will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to face Wofford (Feb. 2) and UNCG (Feb. 3).
