
Richmond Earns 5-2 Win Against Navy

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team picked up its first win of the spring season taking down the United States Naval Academy, 5-2, Saturday at the Country Club of Virginia.
"Navy is so well coached and they fight so hard nothing is easy against them," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "I was so proud of the way we came back tonight in the third sets. It showed our mental toughness too."
The Spiders pulled ahead 1-0 after winning two of the three doubles matches. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) earned a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles against Catalina Rico and Amanda Cyr.
Navy's Miranda Deng and Tina Li defeated Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway), 6-2, at No. 3 doubles. Richmond clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles with Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria) picking up the win over Aimee Dervishian and Danika Kahatapitiva.
In singles action, Heiberg gave the Spiders a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Kacey Moore at No. 5 singles. Navy cut the lead to 2-1 after Annalise Klopfer defeated Zlateva, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3 singles.
Richmond made it 3-1 after Owens earned a 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 win against Meghana Komarraju, at No. 4 singles. Dunbar clinched the match at No. 1 singles with a tough third set win against Ansofi Wreder, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
At No. 2 singles, Marshall earned a comeback win in three sets against Kaylah Hodge, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. In the final match, sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) lost in straight sets to Katreina Corpuz, 6-4, 6-1.
Richmond will return to the courts at Delaware on Friday, Feb. 15, at 8:30 p.m.
