
Richmond Battles No. 23 Virginia In 5-2 Loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team battled in singles earning two wins but lost on the road at Virginia, 5-2, Tuesday at the Boar's Head Sports Club. Junior Kiana Marshall (Bridgetown, Barbados) and sophomore Adrienne Haynes (Asheville, N.C.) each picked up wins in singles.
"I thought we competed well today against a strong UVA team," head coach Mark Wesselink said. "We came away with a lot of positives getting two wins at No. 2 and No. 6. I was proud of how the team kept battling and Lea (Owens) played really tough at No. 4 singles losing in a tiebreak. I am looking forward to watching the team keep improving with each match."
In doubles, Virginia took a 1-0 lead after winning matches at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles. Amber O'Dell and Erica Susi earned a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Lyndell Giffenig (Salisbury, Conn.) and freshman Helene Heiberg (Oslo, Norway). UVA clinched the doubles point with a win at No. 2 doubles as Hunter Blesser and Vivian Glozman defeated Lea Owens (Olney, Md.) and Dessi Zlateva (Sofia, Bulgaria), 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, Emily Dunbar (Medina, Ohio) and Marshall went unfinished against Meghan Kelley and Sofia Munera at 5-5.
In singles action, Glozman gave Virginia a 2-0 lead with a straight-sets win against Zlateva, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. At No. 5 singles, Bleser made it 3-0 Virginia after a 6-1, 6-2 win against Heiberg.
Virginia clinched the match at No. 1 singles after Kelley defeated Dunbar, 6-2, 6-0. Haynes won a tight match at No. 6 singles after taking down Susi, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (6). Haynes won the super tiebreaker 10-6 in the third set.
Marshall earned another point for the Spiders at No. 2 singles with a 7-6 (5), 1-6, 1-0 (6) win against O'Dell. Marshall won a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) and won the super tiebreaker, 10-6, in the third set.
In the final match, Owens fell just short against Munera, 7-5, 7-6 (5), at No. 4 singles to make the score 5-2 Virginia. Owens almost forced a third set but lost a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-5).
Richmond will host Navy on Saturday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m. indoors at the Country Club of Virginia.
