Spiders Fall at Maryland
02/05/2017 | Women's Tennis
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Despite a hard-fought performance in both singles and doubles play, the University of Richmond women's tennis team was unable to overcome a tough Maryland team on the road, falling 7-0 to the Terps on Sunday afternoon.
“We knew the first part of our schedule would be the toughest stretch,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match. “We have to make sure the team keeps improving and everyone keeps their heads up.”
The Terrapins took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions, before winning all six singles spots on their home courts.
“We competed well and could have forced a third set at a number of positions, but Maryland was just too tough today,” Wesselink added.
Despite the loss, the Spiders saw valiant efforts from multiple players, including freshman Kiana Marshall and senior Kelsey Williams. Both Marshall and Williams nearly fought their way into a deciding third set in their singles matches, but ultimately dropped their second sets 7-5.
“We are going to be very good, this is just one of the building blocks for our program,” Wesselink said.
The Spiders return to action next Friday, when they travel to Norfolk to take on in-state rival Old Dominion. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
