Spiders Drop Road Match at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – The University of Richmond women's team put up a fight on Friday afternoon, but could not overcome Old Dominion, falling 7-0 in Norfolk.
“This wasn't the result we wanted, but it was a good match and I was proud of our fight,” head coach Mark Wesselink said.
The Lady Monarchs took the doubles point with wins on courts 2 and 3, but senior Brittany Boys and junior Gaby Rosales were impressive in the No. 1 position, taking down ODU's Holly Hutchinson and Nataliia Vlasova, 6-3.
“We had the lead on all doubles courts, but we showed our youth with four freshmen at courts 2 and 3 who stepped back just a little with the lead,” Wesselink added. “That cost us today, but will help us develop for the future.”
In singles play, freshmen Dessislava Zlateva, Kiana Marshall and Lea Owens all played close matches, but were unable to overcome their opponents.
“Old Dominion is a very strong team, but matches like this help us develop as a team,” Wesselink said. “We're ready to get into the heart of our season, and hopefully play outside soon.”
The Spiders return to action next Thursday and Friday, when they return home to host UNC Greensboro and Longwood, respectively. Thursday's match against the Spartans is set for 2 p.m.
