Spiders Roll Past Longwood, 5-2

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team took advantage of the beautiful weather on Friday afternoon, downing Longwood, 5-2, at the Westhampton Tennis Courts.
“It was good to defend our home courts,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match. “I was happy with our play today, and we'll look to build on this momentum for our next match.”
The Spiders started strong, sweeping doubles play to take a one-point lead heading into singles action.
Sophomore Ana Ramirez rolled on court six for the Spiders, taking down Fallon Burger 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Dessislava Zlateva also dominated in singles play, defeating Marija Venta 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 2 spot, before fellow freshman Lea Owens clinched the match, winning 6-4, 6-3 on court four over Mason Thomas. Senior Brittany Boys rounded out the scoring for the Spiders, taking down Anna Pelak 6-2, 2-6, 6-0 in the No. 5 spot.
“We had clutch performances from everyone today,” Wesselink added. “Dessi was timing the ball well, and her confidence makes her so tough. Ana returned to last year's dominant form, as did Brittany. Lea competes so hard and just looks stronger with every match.”
“We have some work to do before out next match, but I'm confident this group will be ready.”
The Spiders return to action this Sunday when they host UNCG in a match rescheduled from Wednesday. Match time is set for noon at the Westhampton Courts.
