UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For the second time in three days, the University of Richmond women's tennis team took a 5-2 home victory, this time over UNCG on Sunday afternoon.
“The team likes to keep me on my toes,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the win. “We dropped every first set in singles, but I was impressed with how we were able to bounce back and get the win.”
The Spiders won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead over the Spartans with wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions. Freshmen Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig won on the No. 2 court, 6-3, before UNCG evened things out. Junior Gaby Rosales and senior Brittany Boys then batteld to a 7-6 (7) win on court 1 to clinch the point for the Spiders.
“Brittany and Gaby came up big in the deciding tiebreak to give us a little breathing room, which was very important,” Wesselink added.
UNCG took a 2-1 lead after winning on singles courts 5 and 6, but the Spiders bounced back to win on the four remaining courts to seal the win.
Rosales was able to come out with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 win over UNCG's Sarah Swiderski at No. 2 and even the score for the Spiders.
“With the team score tied at 2-2 and nothing but freshmen left on the court, I might've been just a little bit nervous,” Wesselink said. “But they played amazing pressure tennis to close out the match for us.”
Marshall gave the Spiders a 3-2 lead when she took down Yasmin Franco 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 on court four. Freshman Dessislava Zlateva then clinched the match for Richmond, playing her first-career match in the No. 1 position and defeating Alice Taylor 0-6, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Lea Owens rounded out the 5-2 score with a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 7-6 (5) win at No. 3 over Masey DeMoss.
The Spiders have a 12-day break from competition before they return to action against Elon on March 3. The Phoenix will come to town for a 2 p.m. match.
