GREENVILLE, N.C. – If the University of Richmond men's tennis team were playing the old school “NBA Jam” video game, they'd be on fire.
The Spiders won their sixth straight match on Saturday afternoon, blowing past the Mountaineers of Appalachian State, 4-1 to improve to 7-2 on the year, equaling the best start in school history.
“I'm really proud of our guys for bouncing back with a lot of energy after a long battle for the win yesterday,” Assistant Coach Jamie Morgan said. “Our doubles continued to play well, winning the point quickly and setting the tone. I'm really proud of Caleb for responding after a tough match yesterday, he bounced back and played really well. John and Jacob continued their strong to play to help us lock up the win.”
Seniors Jacob Dunbar and Alexandre Felisa quickly took momentum for the Spiders, winning their doubles match, 6-1, before James Aronson and John Karlawish finished off their doubles match, 6-2, to grab the doubles point for Richmond.
Caleb Troy blew past ASU's Trey Morris at #3 singles, 6-1, 6-0 to push the lead to 2-0, followed by Dunbar winning once again at the top spot, 7-5, 6-3 to get the Spiders within one of the match point.
Karlawish did those honors, finishing off ASU's Milo Bargeron, 6-4, 6-1 to seal the win.
Richmond is back in action in two weeks when they travel to Annapolis for a doubleheader against Navy and Morgan State. First serve is set to begin at 9 a.m.
