Prillaman's Golden Goal Lifts Spiders Past Fordham, 1-0
10/08/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's soccer team has had a flair for the dramatic this season, playing five different opponents to extra time in 2017.
The Spiders had the edge on Sunday afternoon, as senior Lexi Prillaman's goal in the 105th minute sent Richmond past visiting Fordham, 1-0, at Robins Stadium.
"It was a great effort today," head coach Peter Albright said after the win. "Fordham has a strong team and they're right with us in the standings, so it was a game that we couldn't afford to tie. We're proud of how hard we've worked, and we hope we can build on this."
The two teams played to a scoreless tie through 90 minutes of regulation play and then 15 extra minutes, before Prillaman was able to steal the ball on a short goal kick pass to a Ram defender and send it sailing over the Fordham goalkeeper into the net.
The opening half was a defensive battle, as neither team was able to register a shot on goal. The Rams had the best chance of the half in the 11th minute, when Juliana Mascelli took a long shot that hit the crossbar, but every other chance was blocked or sent wide.
Fordham stepped up its offensive efforts in the second half, outshooting the Spiders, 10-5, and testing senior goalkeeper Katie Brennan. Brennan and the Spider defensive unit stopped each Fordham scoring opportunity, sending the game into overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime, Prillaman's goal came just over four minutes into the second sudden-victory period to give the Spiders their first overtime victory of the season.
"I was really proud of our grit and our resolve to stay in the battle as long as we did, and we produced a good chance and Lexi finished it," Albright added.
Brennan finished the game with three saves, all in the second half, to record her first shutout of the year. Fordham held a 16-12 shot advantage, while the Spiders led in corner kicks, 5-4.
Richmond returns to action on Thursday, October 12, when it plays host to crosstown rival VCU. Kickoff at Robins Stadium is set for 7:30pm.
