10/12/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – For 90 minutes, the University of Richmond women's soccer team put its crosstown rival to the test.
Back and forth, battling for balls and continually putting pressure on the Rams of VCU. But in the end, the Spiders' effort came up just short, falling 1-0 in Atlantic 10 action on Thursday evening at Robins Stadium.
Senior Katie Brennan held the opposition to one goal or less for the fourth time in the past six games and classmate Lexi Prillaman fired off a team-high five shots in the contest.
Richmond started to test the Rams' defense early when Alyssa Walker got loose in the down the far sideline and fired a beautiful cross in the 23rd minute that was just knocked away to keep the game scoreless.
Less than two minutes later, VCU countered with a diving header that found the bottom left corner of the net to grab a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, Prillaman tried to answer with a long chance for a breakaway, but a diving VCU keeper broke up the opportunity.
Just before halftime, Lindsey Williams fed Prillaman with a beautiful pass, but her blast from 15 yards out was knocked away to keep it 1-0 in favor of the Rams at halftime.
The Spiders continued the pressure in the second half, testing the VCU defense countless times in the final 45 minutes.
Richmond's defense was impressive, holding the Rams off the scoreboard for the entire second half, thanks to plays like Alexis Pringle made in the 64th minute when she sprinted back to break up a wide-open opportunity for VCU and keep the game within a goal.
In the game's final minute, the Spiders' earned a corner and brought everyone forward, but it was knocked away as the Rams' held on for the 1-0 win.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday when they travel to Saint Louis for a 2 p.m. showdown.
