Spiders Drop Tough 2-0 Decision To George Washington
10/05/2017 | Women's Soccer
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – One of the perennial contenders in the Atlantic 10 visited Robins Stadium on Thursday night and the University of Richmond women's soccer team battled them to the wire.
The Spiders went toe-to-toe with the Colonials of George Washington, but came up just short, falling 2-0 in A-10 action on Thursday night.
Richmond came out aggressive, getting two corners in the first five minutes, but Maya Wright had her shot blocked as the game remained scoreless.
GW would test senior Katie Brennan, but the veteran would respond with three saves in the first 30 minutes to keep the Colonials off the board.
In the 33rd minute, GW was awarded a penalty kick and converted to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spiders would try to tie things up in the final five minutes of the half with three shots on target, but none of them got through as the scored remained 1-0 in favor of the Colonials at halftime.
GW would add to its lead 11 minutes into the second half, putting a header into the top of the net to push the advantage to 2-0.
Richmond wouldn't go away, testing the Colonial defense time and time again. Senior Lexi Prillaman fired off five shots in a 12-minute span, but GW's keeper continued to turn the Spiders' shots away.
Richmond's Lindsey Williams would try to get the Spiders on the board with a blast in the 78th minute, but it sailed just high and GW held on for the 2-0 victory.
The Spiders return to action when they host Fordham on Sunday afternoon at Robins Stadium. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
