
Spiders Down Navy In Spring Home Opener, 4-3

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team evened out its spring record at 1-1 with a win over visiting Navy on Saturday afternoon at the Country Club of Virginia.
“I was very happy with today's performance, especially from some of our veterans who were able to seal the win for us,” head coach Mark Wesselink said after the match.
The Spiders started out strong, taking the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 2 positions. Senior Brittany Boys and junior Gaby Rosales teamed up at No. 1 for a 6-3 win over Navy's Emily Louie-Meadors and Claudia Mackenzie. Freshmen Kiana Marshall and Lyndell Giffenig battled for a win at No. 2, and clinched the point with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (1) defeat of Catalina Rico and Aimee Dervishian.
The Spiders were led in singles play by Rosales, who dominated at the No. 1 spot, taking down Navy's Amanda Keller, 6-2, 6-0. Freshman Lea Owens defeated Ansofi Wreder at No. 5, 7-5. 6-0, to stay undefeated in spring play, while senior Kelsey Williams clinched the win for the Spiders with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 6 over Cat Rico.
“We are looking forward to getting healthy and taking on the next challenge,” Wesselink added. “This team is going to surprise people.”
The Spiders return to action when they travel to take on Maryland next Sunday, February 5. Match time is set for 11:00 am in College Park.
