
Spiders Drop Radford, 5-2, In Season Opener

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team opened the 2016 campaign with an impressive 5-2 victory over in-state foe Radford University on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Virginia Tech.
Freshman Ana Ramirez was impressive in her Spider debut, winning in both singles and doubles action.
“Radford was a good early year test and I'm glad we had some players step up,” said Head Coach Mark Wesselink. “We have some work to do, but we are excited about the possibilities for this team.”
The Spiders jumped out to a lead with Brittany Boys and Katya Salas taking the #2 doubles position, followed by Ramirez and Emily Gitman taking the #3 doubles spot to win the doubles point, 1-0.
Ramirez locked up her singles match quickly, taking down Claire Nguyen, 6-1, 6-0 to push the Richmond lead to 2-0.
Senior Anna Abadias Morales was dominant at the top singles spot, taking down Tarrannum Handa in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Sophomore Gaby Rosales and junior Kelsey Williams also picked up straight set victories to secure the 5-2 win for the Spiders.
Richmond is back in action on Sunday when they take on 48th-ranked Virginia Tech. First serve is set for 10 a.m. in Blacksburg.
