Spider Soccer Asks Fans To Think Pink In October
09/30/2015 | Women's Soccer
Richmond women's soccer returns to the pitch and begins Atlantic 10 Conference play Thursday night, and the team reminds everyone to “Think Pink” to raise awareness during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, starting at 7:30 p.m. against Duquesne. The Spiders are wearing pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off by the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, and folks from the Komen Foundation will be on hand with information and to answer questions for fans in attendance.
The silent auction for jerseys will begin when the gates open at 6:30 p.m. and more details will be available on site for how to win the chosen jersey. Every dollar raised from the night will be given to the Komen Foundation
“It's great to put ourselves in a position to make a small difference,” said head coach Peter Albright. “We have some cancer survivors that are close to our soccer family. We have a flashy new Nike kit that we are excited about and we are excited to serve and contribute to the community in a way we feel is meaningful.”
On the field, the Spiders begin the new 10-game A-10 schedule, which moves to a Thursday-Sunday format this season. Richmond will travel to Massachusetts to play the Minutewomen Sunday at 1 p.m. to complete the opening league weekend.
The Spiders tied Duquesne in Pittsburgh last season to start the league season and beat UMass at home in the final weekend of the regular season to solidify their berth into the A-10 Tournament. Richmond took on one of its toughest non-conference slates in recent memory, with multiple teams currently in the RPI Top 50.
The Spiders have allowed two or fewer goals in six of their eight contests, giving up one or no goals in half of their games so far in 2015.
Admission is free to Richmond home games all season. For fans not in attendance, live stats and A-10 Digital Network video will be available at RichmondSpiders.com Thursday night.
