Late JMU Goal Dashes Quality UR Effort In 1-0 Loss
09/19/2015 | Women's Soccer
HARRISONBURG, VA -- James Madison persevered to score a goal with less than three minutes remaining and take a 1-0 win over Richmond women's soccer Friday afternoon at University Park. The Spiders fall to 2-5 overall, while JMU is now 6-3 on the year.
The Dukes finally got on the scoreboard in the 88th minute off of the third of three consecutive corner kicks late in regulation for the lone score of the game.
“The goal was a bit unlucky in that either team could have scored on a play like that,” said UR head coach Peter Albright. “When you give up as many corner kicks as we did, you are bound to give up a goal and that's what happened.”
Richmond outshot the Dukes 6-2 in the opening half, but the Spiders were put under a lot of second-half pressure in a more open half. JMU had 12 shots to Richmond's nine in the second period. The Dukes produced seven corner kicks in the second half and had nine to Richmond's two in the game.
“I thought we were much better and was very pleased with our performance until the last 10 minutes,” said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. “I thought our system produced everything that we hoped it would produce. JMU came out with some second-half intensity that we had to claw and scrape to match, which was disappointing because we had the game under control and let that slip away.”
The Spiders nearly scored twice on counter attacks and managed to keep the JMU defense under pressure in the middle stages of the second half, but could not break through for a goal.
Richmond has been held scoreless in three consecutive games, the longest stretch since the start of the 2013 season.
Richmond keeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) made three saves in her return after missing the previous three games with injury.
Senior tri-captain Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) posted five shots, one on goal, and fellow captain Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) added three shots. Sophomore Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) produced four shots, one on goal.
The Spiders will start a two-game home stand Sunday, with a 4 p.m. kickoff at Robins Stadium against Longwood.
