Women's Tennis Blanks George Mason At Home

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women's tennis team blanked the George Mason Patriots, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Westhampton College Tennis Courts. The Spiders picked up their first conference victory this season as George Mason is the newest A-10 member.
“Today's win was important as George Mason is new to our conference,” commented Richmond head coach Mark Wesselink. “We just play better on our home courts and this is the part of the season where we do get to play matches at home. It definitely helps us out and we should finish this season strong.”
The Spiders dominated at the start, convincingly winning the doubles portion. Top duo Katya Salas and Brittany Boys recorded a 8-4 win over Morgan Yang/Olivia Lacy-Thompson on court one, while Elizabeth Sims and Denny Lamachia also took a 8-4 win on court two.
Melissa Kandinata and Kelsey Williams closed out the first session with a 8-1 win on court three.
Following her convincing doubles win, Kandinata kept the momentum going with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Brittany Pilkington at the No. 1 spot. Elizabeth Sims, Brittany Boys, Katya Salas and Denny Lamachia all registers straight-set wins, respectively, while Williams battled to get the final point with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 victory to close out the day.
“Melissa Kandinata gets special recognition for winning at No. 1,” added Wesselink. “She played a beautiful match and help our doubles set the tone early today. I am very happy with how the team played and looking forward to a good, hard week of training to prepare for St. Joe's Saturday.”
Richmond will return to the court Sunday, March 29 when it hosts conference foe Saint Joseph's at 10 a.m.
