Wo Men's Tennis Picks Up First Win of the Season
02/03/2012 | Women's Tennis
The Richmond Women's Tennis team downed Liberty University, 4-3, on Thursday in Lynchburg, Va.
The Spiders started strong, picking up two wins in doubles play. Helen Cunningham and Alexandra Smyth finished first in No. 1 Doubles, with an 8-4 victory over Liberty's Cameron Richard and Brittany Yang. Capturing the point was Nil Horoz and Elizabeth Sims, defeating Liberty representatives, 8-5.
In singles play, both Melissa Kandinata and Elizabeth Sims both extinguished their opponents in a straight set. Alexandra Smyth fought through three sets in order to secure the last point for the Spiders to earn the win. Smyth comments, "The last game was very mentally challenging in that I knew I had to close it out or Liberty would take advantage of the opportunity."
"Winning this match 4-3 was crucial because we haven't been in this situation since last spring," says junior Alexandra Smyth. "I believe it will give us confidence going into Philadelphia next weekend, as well as encourage us to continue working hard. This team has great potential and we were all very excited to secure the first win of the season."
The Spiders return to action on February 10 at Fordham.
