UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Visiting Loyola College used two second-half goals to pull away and beat the Richmond women's soccer team, 3-1, at First Market Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Spiders out-shot the Greyhounds 18-13 and were a saved penalty kick away from tying the match before halftime.
With six seconds remaining in the half, Loyola was whistled for a foul inside the box. Susan Boyer stepped in to take the penalty kick and she ripped a shot to left lower 90, but a diving Brittany Henderson made the save.
"I was very unhappy with how we came out in the first half," said Richmond head coach Peter Albright. "We were very passive. I thought we played better in the second half, but we have to put 90 minutes of soccer together if we expect a good result."
Jessie Wolfe led the Spiders with seven shots, including five on goal. Henderson, who played 88 minutes in goal, made eight saves to keep the Greyhounds on top. Richmond keeper Kate Hudson saw 74 minutes of action and allowed two goals with six saves.
Theresa Ferraina scored twice for Loyola (2-4-1), Christina Gomez scored the eventual game-winning goal and added an assist, while Lina Staropoli collected two assists. Gomez struck in the 24th minute, burying a rebound after Hudson saved the original shot by Staropoli. That goal stood as the difference.
The Spiders (1-6-1) open Atlantic 10 Conference play on Friday at Fordham, then return home to face La Salle Sunday at 1 p.m.
"The nice thing is we start with a clean slate on Friday," said Albright. "It's a new season with a 0-0 record."
