RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond men's tennis team fell to Old Dominion 6-1 yesterday evening. The Spiders fall to 1-3 on the season.
Richmond split the first two doubles matches by winning at #2 doubles and losing at #1 doubles, thus making the #3 doubles the determining factor for the overall doubles point. Richmond broke serve at 7-7 and was serving for the match but couldn't hold serve, eventually losing in the tie-breaker 7-3.
"We had that doubles point in our grasp," Coach Gerstenfeld commented.
Freshman Doug Banker continued his strong play by being the only Spider to win his singles match. Two weeks earlier, he was also the only Spider to win his singles match vs. William and Mary. Seniors Jeppy Moss and Derek Schwandt also had impressive efforts by splitting sets with their opponents but couldn't pull out their matches.
"Overall, it was an impressive performance, given the fact that ODU is one of our nation's premier tennis programs. Hopefully, we can sustain the same level of effort throughout the weekend."
Richmond hits the road Saturday morning for a 4:00 p.m. match @ Davidson and then a Sunday morning 8:00 a.m. match on Sunday.
