AMHERST, Mass. -- Meghan Ogilvie headed a crossing pass from Whitney Sikes into the net for the game¹s only goal 8:12 into the second half to give the Richmond Women¹s Soccer team a 1-0 win over the University of Massachusetts on a beautiful afternoon at Rudd Field.
Richmond head coach Peter Albright earned his 100th win as the Spiders' coach.
With the win, the Spiders are now 5-4-1 overall and 3-1-0 in the A-10, while the Minutewomen drop to 3-7-0 overall and 1-3-0 in league play.
"We played hard the entire game," Albright commented. "We were looking to get a few goals early in the game but things didn't work out."
Neither team really got anything going offensively in the first half. The second half belonged all to Richmond as the Minutewomen were unable to have any sustained offensive pressure. Sikes had a chance right in front of the net 1:59 into the beginning of the second stanza, but her shot was saved by sophomore Kristin Walker in the UMass net. Richmond kept up the pressure and eventually got the game-winning tally a few minutes later. Following a corner kick, Sikes crossed a pass to Ogilvie who headed the ball just past Walker from eight yards out. It was her third goal of the season.
Richmond almost made it 2-0 with 18:34 left in regulation. Hillary Prince took a shot from 20 yards dead on that hit the cross bar. Then Christine Wrublesky got the rebound and shot wide.
UMass got one last chance to tie the game just under the five-minute mark. Bellini took consecutive corner kicks, but UMass could not get a shot off.
The Minutewomen were outshot, 17-8, this afternoon, including 11-1 in the second half. Richmond also took eight corner kicks to UMass¹ three. Walker made four saves in the UMass net while Kelly Kolker stopped three shots on the other end.
