Pennsylvania Upends Richmond, 5-2

OCEAN REEF, Fla. - The University of Pennsylvania women's tennis team captured four of six singles matches and won the doubles point to post a 5-2 victory over Richmond.
Richmond claimed victories at two and five singles as Spider newcomer Jeanette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) defeated Quaker freshman Nicole Ptak, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 position. Meanwhile, Richmond sophomore Monika Peetes (Tallinn, Estonia/Tallinn Science School) bested Penn sophomore Niki DeCou in three sets (6-2, 1-6, 6-4) at five singles. In addition, Peetes combined with Spider sophomore Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) to overpower Ptak and Rochelle Raiss at two doubles, 8-1.
In other action, Penn freshman Sanela Kunovac defeated Spider sophomore Jodi Kenoyer (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) at the top singles spot, 6-0, 6-4, while Bagnato dropped a hard-fought 7-6, 7-6 decision at three singles to Quaker senior Shubha Srinvasan. Richmond sophomore Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School) took Penn junior Jolene Sloat to three sets, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Raiss bested Spider junior Michele Koclanes (Pelham, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) at six singles, 6-3, 6-3.
Despite registering a victory at two doubles, Penn claimed the point with wins at one and three. Kunovas teamed with Quaker freshman Rachel Shweky at the top doubles spot, 8-3. At three doubles, Srinivason combined with DeCou to notch an 8-6 win over Cohen and Spider freshman Patty Devlin (York, Pa./York Suburban).
Richmond returns to action on Saturday, March 24, hosting William & Mary at 11 a.m. at UR Tennis Complex.
