
Virginia Defeats Richmond, 5-2

RICHMOND, Va. - Despite claiming victories at two of the top three singles spots, the University of Richmond women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Virginia in non-conference action at the Country Club of Virginia.
Spider freshman Jeanette Cluskey (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) notched a three-sets victory over Cavalier junior Amy O'Donnell (4-6. 6-4, 6-3) at the No. 1 spot, while Richmond sophomore Vanessa Bagnato (Manhasset, N.Y./Manhasset) bested Christie Schweer at three singles, 6-1, 6-0. Bagnato improved to 4-2 on the spring campaign in singles action. Virginia's only victory at the top three spots was at No. 2 singles, where sophomore Henriette Williams bested Jodi Kenoyer (Lighthouse Point, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) in three sets (1-6, 6-3, 6-2). Four singles was decided in three sets as Cavalier newcomer Laura James outlasted Spider sophomore Casey Cohen (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./The Bolles School), 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Virginia registered straight-sets victories at No. 5 (6-2, 7-5) and No. 6 (6-4, 6-3) singles.
Cluskey and Kenoyer combined to record an 8-4 win at the top doubles spot, but UVa responded by coming away with victories at the following two spots to secure the doubles point and help capture the match.
Richmond (2-5, 0-0 Colonial Athletic Association) returns to action on Saturday, March 3, visiting North Carolina State at 1 p.m. in a make up of a match that was previously rained out.
