Spiders Soar Past Hawks, 2-0

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The University of Richmond scored two goals in the last 11 minutes of play to best Atlantic 10 foe St. Joseph's, 2-0 on Friday night at First Market Stadium. The Spiders improve to 3-1-0 in the Atlantic 10, 4-5-1 overall while the Hawks drop to 1-1-2 in the conference and 4-3-2 overall.
The Spiders out shot the Hawks, 20-7 in the contest including 12-4 in the second half. In the 80th minute, Richmond junior forward Jenna Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) took a pass from senior forward Laura Gincel (Princeton, N.J./West Windsor) and headed it just past the outstretched arms of Hawks goalkeeper Christy Ganc. It was the fifth goal of the year for Merriam, the Spiders' leading scorer.
The Spiders added insurance three minutes later when sophomore back Edda Gardarsdottir (Reykjavik, Iceland/Breidholti) delivered a low corner kick from the left side. With the ball loose in front of the goal, junior Anne Rieser (Middletown, Md./Middletown) netted the score on a diving slider past the keeper.
The Spiders continue Atlantic 10 on Sunday, October 14 hosting the Temple Owls at 1:00 p.m. at First Market Stadium.
