Ryan Colton joined Richmond as UR's Associate Athletics Director for Compliance in June 2018. During the fall semester in 2020, he was elevated to Senior Associate AD for Compliance & Governance/Chief of Staff and he was promoted to Deputy Director of Athletics/Chief of Staff in July 2022.
Colton oversees the operations of the Office of Athletics Compliance Services, provides staff support to the Board of Trustees Athletics Committee, serves as liaison with the Office of Legal Counsel, coordinates the administration of the Office of the Vice President & Director of Athletics as well as the Senior Management Group, and directs the operations of the Athletics Business Office.
Colton spent six years in intercollegiate athletics before becoming a Spider. He was Assistant AD for Compliance at Holy Cross, where he was responsible for developing a culture of compliance with NCAA and Patriot League rules through a strong monitoring program. In addition to handling compliance at Holy Cross, Colton oversaw student-athlete eligibility and the department's policies and procedures manual, while serving as the supervisor for the golf and swimming & diving programs. He also served as the chair of the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Committee.
Prior to his time at Holy Cross, Colton served as a special assistant to the athletics director at Providence College for two years, a period that overlapped with his term as a City Councilor in Taunton, Mass.
Colton earned his Juris Doctor degree in 2007 from New England Law - Boston, the same year he was sworn into the Massachusetts Bar. Colton worked in the Massachusetts State Senate from 2006 to 2008 and practiced law from 2008 to 2013.
A 2004 graduate of Bucknell University, Colton was a four-year member of the Bison football team as a quarterback.
Colton and his wife, Brittany, are the parents of two children, Grady and Ella.
