In his capacity as Associate Athletics Director for Academic Support & Student Services, Matthews oversees all student-athlete support and development programs for Spider student-athletes.
During his tenure at Richmond, the Spiders have experienced unprecedented academic success. During the spring 2024 semester, every Spiders team posted a term GPA of 3.0 or greater, a first for Richmond Athletics in a semester not governed by COVID-19 grading policies. During the 2023-24 school year, Spider swimming & diving posted a 3.795 team GPA, the second-highest among all Division I swimming & diving teams. In 2021, the men’s golf team was crowned “Academic National Champions” after posting the highest team GPA of the more than 1,000 men's college golf teams across all NCAA divisions, the NAIA, and the NJCAA.
An All-America baseball player at Salisbury University, Matthews earned both undergraduate and master’s degrees in history. He then attended Auburn University as a doctoral student in American History, specializing in the Reconstruction Era. After leaving Auburn’s history department for the university’s College of Liberal Arts, Matthews became an academic advisor for undeclared students.
After several years in that position, Matthews joined Auburn’s athletic department as an athletic counselor for its football program. Beyond working with Auburn’s football program, He managed the athletic department’s tutor program and implemented a supplemental instructional model that served the entire campus community.
Matthews resides in Midlothian with his wife, Jennifer and their three children: Caitlin, Faith and Rachel.
