Richmond Tops Radford, Extends Record Unbeaten Streak

RADFORD, Va. — Richmond scored on either side of halftime and sophomore Isabel Seifert made five second-half saves as the Spiders defeated Radford 2-1 Sunday at Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium, extending their unbeaten streak to a program-record nine games.

Richmond generated several chances late in the opening half. After Radford goalkeeper Lexi Radvanyi stopped Erika Schneider's penalty kick in the 33rd minute, Alex Reigle forced another save in the 36th before breaking through just 30 seconds later. Avery Nam drove a corner kick into the box, where Reigle fired home a header to put the Spiders ahead 1-0 and register the first goal of her career.

Radford answered shortly before halftime when Haley Blake scored in the 43rd minute, sending the teams into the break tied at 1-1. Richmond held a 7-5 advantage in shots and put four attempts on goal in the opening 45 minutes.

Following a 70-minute weather delay, Seifert replaced Veronica Rrapi in goal to start the second half and was tested almost immediately, making saves in the 53rd and 58th minutes. Richmond regained the lead in the 59th when freshman Christina Stamoulacatos collected a ball that had been slid to her from Kingsley Hughes, looked up, and slotted a left-footed shot past the keeper from 30 yards out. It was the first goal of Stamoulacatos' career.

Radford pressed for an equalizer throughout the closing stages, outshooting Richmond 10-7 in the second half and earning six corner kicks. Seifert turned away every shot on goal she faced, adding saves in the 78th, 81st and 86th minutes to preserve the lead. She finished with a career-high five saves in 45 scoreless minutes and has yet to give up a goal in 270 minutes played this season.

Richmond improved to 3-0-3 this season, remaining unbeaten through six games for the first time in program history. Dating back to last season, the Spiders are 4-0-5 over their last nine matches, breaking the previous program record of eight consecutive games without a loss set in October 2011.

Radford finished with a 15-14 edge in shots, while both teams put seven attempts on goal. Stamoulacatos led Richmond with four shots, while Reigle scored on one of her two shots on goal.

Richmond will remain on the road Thursday, traveling to VMI for a 4 p.m. match.
