Nicholls Leads Spider Field Hockey Past American, 2-0

WASHINGTON, DC – After a scoreless defensive battle in the first half, Richmond was able to break through and capture a 2-0 victory over American University in a weather shortened game Friday afternoon at Jacobs Complex. The Spiders broke a three-game losing streak to the Eagles, collecting the first victory since a 3-2 road victory in 2019.
Richmond, now 2-1 on the season, stays on the road and heads to Farmville to take on Longwood Sunday, Sept. 6. Game time is set for 1 PM at Elizabeth Burger Jackson Field and will be streamed on ESPN+.
Amanda Cimillo made four of her five saves in the first half, coming up with two big stops on the Eagles penalty corner attempts. Elen Nicholls also picked up a defensive save in the second quarter.
Richmond came out of the break with renewed presence on the field. After only getting one shot off in the first half and no penalty corners, UR quickly earned a corner and fired off three shots.
On the second Spiders penalty corner of the quarter, Valen Luna Paratore found Freya MacKay for the stick stop to set up Nicholls' pass to Clara Larripa to break up the scoreless game in the 43rd minute. Larripa is now tied with Abril Peroni with a team-leading eight points on four goals in three games this season.
Nicholls successfully executed the Spiders third penalty corner of the game in the 47th minute of action. She fired home a one-timer on a direct insert from Luna Paratore for her second goal of the season. Nicholls is second on the team with seven points on two goals and three assists.
The game went into a lightening delay at the 49:06 mark in the contest. After over an hour wait, the game was called.
