Spiders Stifle Longwood Attack in 0-0 Draw

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond extended the best unbeaten start in program history to five games Thursday, battling Longwood to a 0-0 draw at President's Field at River Road. The Spiders moved to 2-0-3 and have now put together their longest single-season unbeaten streak since 2014. Dating back to last season, Richmond is unbeaten in eight straight matches at 3-0-5.
Longwood generated the better chances early despite Richmond controlling 62% of the possession in the first half. The Lancers outshot the Spiders 5-2 over the opening 45 minutes and put three attempts on frame, with Veronica Rrapi turning away each one. Rrapi made her first stop in the 15th minute before adding saves in the 29th and 30th minutes to keep the match scoreless.
Richmond did not register its first shot until Emma Newman forced a save in the 37th minute, but the Spiders came out firing after halftime. Julia Lishia put a shot on goal just 39 seconds into the second half, Christina Stamoulacatos forced another save 22 seconds later and Jess Moylan followed with a third shot on frame in the 47th minute.
The Spiders went on to outshoot Longwood 6-1 in the second half, with five of their six attempts on goal. Newman forced two more saves, including Richmond's final shot in the 83rd minute, while the Lancers did not record their lone second-half attempt until the 90th minute.
Richmond finished with an 8-6 advantage in shots, a 6-3 edge in shots on goal and a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks while controlling 55% of the possession. Newman led the Spiders with three shots, all on frame.
Isabel Seifert replaced Rrapi in net at halftime and did not need to make a save as the duo combined for Richmond's third consecutive shutout and fourth in five games this season. The Spiders have not allowed a goal in their last 270 minutes and have surrendered just one in 450 minutes this season.
Richmond will return to the road Sunday for a 2 p.m. match at Radford.
