PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Former Spider and current New York State amateur champion Matthew Lowe has advanced to the match play portion of the US Amateur Championship after finishing two rounds of stroke play at 1-over par (141), tied for 33rd in the 312-man field. Lowe, a three-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference selection who led the Spiders to the 2017 A10 title, shot an even-par 70 at Philadelphia Country Club Tuesday after opening the event with a 1-over 71 at famed Merion Golf Club Monday.
Lowe, who teed off in the first group at 7 AM Monday morning, quickly developed a devoted online following due to his decision to carry his own bag, his on-course style, and his steady play.
Lowe qualified for event, the country's most prestigious tournament for amateur golfers, by winning the New York State Men's Amateur Championship last month.
Over four years at Richmond, Lowe rewrote the Spiders record book, leaving UR as the program's all-time leader in career scoring average (73.43) and single-season scoring average (71.91 in 2015-16). He still holds the Richmond record for lowest 18-hole score with an 8-under 63 at Lonnie Poole Golf Club in 2016, the same year he was an at-large qualifier for the NCAA Regionals.
NBC Sports Newtork and Peacock will broadcast Round of 64 match play action Wednesday from 3 PM to 6 PM.
