Polin Leads 3 Spiders in Top 30 at Rain-Shortened Rod Myers Invitational

DURHAM, N.C. — Richmond completed a 5-under-par 283 in Round 2 of the Rod Myers Invitational Tuesday to finish ninth at the rain-shortened event at Duke University Golf Club.
The Spiders improved nine shots from their opening-round 292 and moved up one spot on the leaderboard, completing the 36-hole event at 1-under par (575). UNCG won the 13-team tournament at 20-under, five shots ahead of UNCW.
"Monday was not our best - we didn't take advantage of the par 5 holes enough to move up the leaderboard," said Richmond coach Adam Decker. "The second round was a little bit of the same, but we were able to finish the second round with a lot of birdies and went 5-under in our last six holes."
Round 2 was suspended due to lightning Monday afternoon with most golfers approximately halfway through the round. Play resumed Tuesday morning, but continued rain forced tournament organizers to cancel Round 3 and shorten the event from 54 to 36 holes.
"It was too bad the final round was canceled. We had nice momentum but that's how it goes sometimes," said Decker.
Senior Quin Polin was Richmond's top individual finisher, tying for 14th at 3-under par (141) following rounds of 71 and 70. It was his third top-20 finish in as many events this season. He played the par 5s at Duke University Golf Club in 5-under par, tied for third best in the field.
Freshman Davis Conaway recorded Richmond's low round of the event, improving five shots from an opening-round 74 with a 3-under 69 in Round 2. He tied for 23rd at 1-under par (143) while making nine birdies over the two rounds, tied for sixth most of any player.
Senior Jack LaPiana tied for 29th at even par (144) following rounds of 71 and 73.
Senior Parker Moellinger followed an opening-round 76 with a 1-under 71 and tied for 46th at 3-over par (147). Graduate student Mason Deal recorded consecutive rounds of 76 and tied for 72nd at 8-over par (152).
Competing as an individual, senior Tyler Lee tied for 61st at 6-over par (150) following rounds of 76 and 74.
Up next, the Spiders will take on Davidson in a one-day match at Waterville Golf Links during the team's fall break trip to Ireland.
