Spider Baseball Takes Series Opener at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS – The Richmond baseball team captured a 4-1 victory over Saint Louis in the Atlantic 10 Conference series opener Friday night at the Billikens Sports Complex. With the win, Richmond stays tied with VCU for the two-seed in the 2026 Atlantic 10 Baseball Championship.
Richmond, now 31-22 on the year and 18-10 in A-10 play, and Saint Louis, 20-32 on the season and 11-17 in league action, return to Billikens Sports Complex for game two of the A-10 series Friday with first pitch set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
The Spiders offense struck first when Evan Wilson scored on RJ Johnson Jr.'s ground out in the first inning.
SLU answered with a run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first. After that Richmond's pitchers did not allow another run. Chase Topolski went four innings, allowing the only SLU run on two hits, two walks and five strikeouts.
Chayse Gruber tossed three innings to collect the win, scattering just three hits and one hit batter while striking out four. Justin Gay picked up his team-leading sixth save of the season after striking out three in two innings of work.
In the fourth inning, Wilson doubled down the left field line to score Aidan O'Keefe from first to take the lead, 2-1.
Richmond added two more insurance runs in the seventh. Dylan Winebrenner collected his second hit of the day when he sent the pitch back up the middle of the infield to score Michael Elko from second, after he stole his team-leading 26th stolen base of the season. One batter later, Winebrenner scored on Johnson Jr.'s double and a Saint Louis miscue in the outfield to give Richmond a 4-1 lead.
