MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — The Richmond Spiders are tied for fourth following a marathon 36-hole day at the Giles-Spratley Collegiate at Independence Golf Club. Richmond completed Rounds 1 & 2 of the event in a combined 4-under par (572), the same as A-10 rival VCU. Both teams trail Liberty (6-under par), Florida Gulf Coast (14-under par), and leader Charleston (19-under par) in the field of 16.
The Spiders were led by junior Jack LaPiana Monday. He opened with an even-par 72 and was even in his second round through 14 holes before rallying to make three birdies in his final four holes.
"I was rolling it well all day and then I strung together a couple of good shots and just happened to get a few to go in so that was a nice finish. There's still a lot of work to do for the team and individually, but that was good," said LaPiana, who is tied for seventh at 3-under par (141).
Junior Quin Polin was tied for fifth after opening with a 4-under 68 and now sits in a tie for 12th at 2-under par (142) after a 74 (+2) in Round 2.
Sophomore Carson Baez is tied for 22nd at 1-under par. He played the par 5s at Independence in a combined 8-under Monday, second best in the field. He was also the only golfer to make a pair of eagles.
Junior Parker Moellinger is tied for 41st at 2-over par (146), three shots in front of freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron, who is tied for 63rd at 5-over par (149).
Three Spiders are competing as individuals in the event. That group was led by senior Drew Carlin, who followed an opening 76 (+4) with a 1-under 71 in Round 2 and is tied for 47th at 3-over par (147).
Sophomores Tommy Sharps (+14) and Tyler Lee (+14) are in 82nd and 83rd place, respectively.
Richmond is hosting an event at its home course for the first time since the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I just think when you don't have your best stuff you're able kind of scrape it around and get a good round out of it, even if you're not hitting it well or not putting it well, just because you know every inch of this golf course you can kind of play your misses pretty well," said LaPiana when asked about the benefit of playing on a familiar layout. "It's not as hard as playing a course you've never played before."
Tee times for Tuesday's final round will begin at 8 AM.
