WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Richmond Spiders men's golf team finished 10th at UNCW's Seahawk Intercollegiate Tuesday, snapping its streak of consecutive tournament wins and recording its first tournament finish outside the top five since the Furman Intercollegiate last October. Richmond combined to shoot 19-over par (883) over the tournament's three rounds, 10th best in the field of 15. Host UNCW won the event at 18-under par (846).
"The course was fairly tight with a good amount of pretty tough tee shots," said junior Jack LaPiana. "There was also a ton of water and navigating around it was very tricky due to some pretty strong winds."
Junior Quin Polin was Richmond's top finisher, tying for 22nd at 2-over par (218) after carding a 4-over 76 in Round 3 Tuesday. Polin managed to offset some of the damage from double bogeys on the ninth and 13th holes by playing his final five holes in 2-under par.
Sophomore Carson Baez's 2-under 70 in Round 3 was four shots clear of any other Spider and moved him up into a tie for 26th place at 3-over par (219). Baez sandwiched a pair of 70s in Rounds 1 and 3 around a 7-over 79 in Round 2 Monday afternoon. He came home in 4-under par Tuesday, carding a pair of birdies and an eagle on the back 9.
LaPiana, back in Richmond's lineup after missing more than a month due to injury, tied for 49th at 8-over par (224). "It was nice to be back in the lineup and competing again. I wish I could've done more to help the team out but it was still good to be there," he said following the event.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron tied for 54th at 9-over par (225), and senior Drew Carlin tied for 83rd at 18-over par (234).
Richmond's 20 double bogeys or worse were tied for second most of any team, trailing only Davidson's 21.
The Spiders have two scheduled events left this season: next week's Giles-Spratley Collegiate at their home course, Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va., and the 2026 Atlantic 10 Championship in Orlando, Fla. from April 27-29.
